Wyre Council Announces Future Plans for Leisure Centres: A Thank You to YMCA Fylde Coast and Commitment to Continued Service
17th of September, 2025
Wyre Council is preparing for a smooth transition in the management of its leisure centres in Garstang, Fleetwood, Poulton, and Thornton, as part of its commitment to delivering high-quality, value-for-money services for residents.
The current contract for operating these facilities, held by YMCA Fylde Coast since 2006, will conclude on 31 March 2026. Over the past 20 years, the YMCA has played a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our communities, and Wyre Council wishes to express its sincere gratitude for their dedication, professionalism, and the positive impact they have made across the borough.
Over the past two decades, YMCA has delivered thousands of swimming lessons, hosted hundreds of community events, and supported countless residents in improving their health and wellbeing.
“We are hugely proud to have worked with Wyre Council on the operation of their leisure facilities for as long as we have,” said Graham Oatridge, CEO of YMCA Fylde Coast. “We have continued to offer an accessible and varied service, which is more affordable now than it was ten years ago. As recently as this year, YMCA Thornton was recognised by the Association of Public Service Excellence as a Best Performer in the industry and we are proud of the service we have offered to the community. However, the requirement of Wyre Council and it’s centres is now different, and we believe that the time is right for another provider to come forward to work with the Council on developing the facilities over the long term. I’d like to place on record my gratitude to the staff that have been so committed in delivering the best service possible and to Wyre Council for working in partnership with YMCA over the course of the contract. Needless to say, we remain determined to work hard over the remaining term of the contract to deliver for our members and communities. Despite this decision, YMCA will continue to deliver our charitable housing, youth and community work in Wyre, at the same time as investing in our owned leisure centres in Fylde.’
Over the last 12 months, Wyre Council has undertaken a formal procurement process to identify a new operator who will take over the management of the centres from 1 April 2026.
The procurement process began with the publication of contract requirements to the leisure sector in late 2024 and a rigorous competitive tendering process has followed. Following a review of these requirements, the YMCA confirmed that it would not be submitting a bid for the new contract.
The Council is currently evaluating bids from prospective operators, with the successful provider expected to be announced in December 2025.
Councillor Lynne Bowen, Leisure, Health and Community Engagement Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council said: “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the YMCA Fylde Coast for their long-standing partnership and the invaluable contribution they have made to leisure services in Wyre. Their commitment has helped shape inclusive, welcoming spaces that have supported thousands of residents in leading healthier, more active lives.
"Whilst there are going to be changes to the overall management of the centres, we want to reassure residents and users that all Wyre leisure centres are transferring to the new provider as part of this new contract. To prepare for the handover on 1st April 2026, there will be some short-term, temporary works required to facilitate essential maintenance or upgrades to some facilities within the leisure centres. This will be clearly communicated in advance to keep the public informed and minimise inconvenience.
“These centres are at the heart of our communities, providing vital spaces for physical activity, social connection, and mental wellbeing. From swimming lessons and fitness classes to inclusive programmes for older adults, young people and those with disabilities, they support healthier, happier lives for thousands of residents. Our priority is to maintain continuity of service, the quality of those services and ensure that everyone continues to benefit from the welcoming, supportive environment our centres offer."
Wyre Council and the YMCA are working together to ensure a smooth and well-managed transition. Wyre Council recognises the dedication of leisure centre staff and the loyalty of our members. We are committed to keeping everyone informed and supported throughout this transition. The incoming operator will join this collaborative effort upon appointment, with a clear focus on engaging staff and users and communicating both immediate and long-term plans for the future of the centres.
